Shining brightly from the Harris stage, these two ballets found their first glow from that beautiful proscenium.
Come with us to the theater and enjoy the energy of the ballets again!
Secrets de Printemps is an energetic ballet, bringing Maurice Ravel’s beautiful “Le Tombeau de Couperin” to life. The style and rhythmic intricacies of the score inspired a new world to be created. The work can be seen as a richly detailed fantasy novel told through movement. The first movement depicts the guardians of the realm, the second, the creatures inside, the third is a kingdom in the clouds, and the fourth movement is a festival.
The Creatures of Prometheus is a wonderful story of gods and muses, the creation of culture, and the magic of fire. With a masterfully crafted score by Beethoven (his first and only ballet, written in 1801), the Greek myth of Prometheus stealing fire from Zeus and giving it to mankind unfolds. Balletic divertissements ensue, passing on the delights of music, dance, comedy, and drama. The element of fire here is not just a symbol of survival, but an igniting of passion, a crucial component of a society’s ability to progress. Prometheus as a character, and this story, are increasingly relevant today, because they bring forth the moral value of sacrificing to benefit a greater good.
