Since the School of Ballet Chicago's inception in 1995, the organization has experienced tremendous growth in its programs, performances, and enrollment. Additionally, the Ballet Chicago studios have served as the home for Deeply Rooted Productions for the past twelve years and, more recently, as the rehearsal space for several Broadway productions.

Ballet Chicago's growth, along with the expanded activities of its resident companies and increasing cross-company collaborations, created the need for a more spacious and modern facility. In response, the Ballet Chicago Board of Directors launched a project to find a state-of-the-art space that would allow the organization to expand its presence in the Chicago community, increase performance and outreach activities, and support continued growth.

Negotiations for a new space were completed in August 2009, and Ballet Chicago, along with its resident companies, moved into its new home in October 2009. The lease was renewed for another 10 years in October 2019.
